The method

Centre first.
Everything else is a consequence.

Twelve weeks in three turns. It is the same order every time, because the order is the part that works: find the axis, raise the walls, put it under heat while there is still someone beside you.

Why centring comes first

An error at the base is multiplied by every pull.

Put a lump on the wheel three millimetres off the axis and open it anyway. The rim doesn’t wobble by three millimetres. Each pull carries the error further from the centre, so by the time the wall is eight inches tall the lip is swinging a hand’s width and the pot tears itself apart on the way up.

Nothing was wrong with the clay. Nothing was wrong with the pulling. The fault was set before the first pull, and no amount of skill higher up the wall can take it out again.

That is the whole argument for this method. Most people arrive wanting the walls — the new role, the boundary, the calmer mornings — and are already pulling hard. We stop the pulling for three weeks and find the axis first, because every hour spent there is repaid several times over higher up.

The last row is the point. A centred life still goes wrong — it just goes wrong in ways you can put your hands back on.

Three turns of the wheel

Centre, shape, fire.

Twelve weeks, thirteen in the calendar so there is a week of slack in it. The order does not change. The pace inside each stage does.

01
Weeks 1–3 · three sessions

Centre

We do not set a single goal in the first three weeks. We find the axis.

In the room
  • Session one is a long listen. You talk, we map, nothing is decided.
  • Session two names the forces actually pulling you off axis — usually three, rarely the three you came in with.
  • Session three writes one sentence you can return to. That sentence is the axis, and it is yours to edit for the rest of the programme.
Between sessions

Five minutes a day of noticing, written in a line. No practice, no journalling prompt, no app.

You leave holding

One sentence, in your handwriting, that describes what you want to hold true.

The tell

The wobble you had stopped noticing becomes impossible to un-notice.

02
Weeks 4–10 · seven sessions

Shape

Steady pressure, one wall at a time, in the order the form can take it.

In the room
  • Each session opens one wall and only one: a boundary, a habit, a conversation you have been rehearsing for months.
  • We work out loud — you will say the difficult sentence in the room before you say it anywhere else.
  • When a wall collapses we do not start again from scratch. We find where the pressure went uneven and pull from there.
Between sessions

One commitment a week, sized so that keeping it is realistic on your worst day, not your best.

You leave holding

Changes you have made, not a plan for changes you intend to make.

The tell

You stop rehearsing conversations in the shower, because you have already had them.

03
Weeks 11–12 · two sessions, then after

Fire

What is shaped has to be set, and setting means heat, deliberately applied.

In the room
  • We put the new form under load on purpose: the week you dread, the person who will test the boundary first, the season when this always slips.
  • We look for the thin places while there is still someone beside you to see them.
  • The last session writes a firing note — what holds, what is thin, what to watch for, what to do when it moves.
Between sessions

Nothing new. The last fortnight is for living with it, not for adding to it.

You leave holding

A one-page firing note, and a standing invitation to come back to The Kiln if you want the hour kept.

The tell

The first genuinely hard week after we stop — and nothing collapses.

Before you enquire

What the method is not.

Not therapy.

Coaching works forward from a life that is basically standing. It is not treatment, and it does not go where trauma, diagnosis or crisis need a clinician. If that is what is live, we will say so inside the first conversation and help you find the right person instead — no fee, no awkwardness.

Not a plan we hand you.

Nobody here writes your framework and emails it over. You keep your hands on the clay the entire time; the work is yours, in your words, at your pace. What we bring is the steady pressure and the second pair of eyes on the wobble.

Not fast.

Three of the twelve weeks pass before we shape anything at all, and clients regularly describe those three as the part they wanted to skip and are afterwards most glad they did not. If you need something resolved this fortnight, take a Single Sitting instead.

Not a fit for everyone.

We run six people through The Wheel at a time, and we turn work away when the fit is wrong — wrong stage, wrong moment, or simply the wrong coach for you. A no from us is a real answer, given quickly, with a suggestion attached.

If this reads like your year

Bring the wobble.
We will find the axis.

A first conversation is twenty minutes, free, and ends with a straight answer about whether the method fits where you actually are. Programme details and prices are on the programmes page.
